In June of 2017, I purchased a 53 foot, single diesel engine, 52 ton steel trawler. This was my very first boat and I knew I would need professional help to learn how to safely operate "Rosemar".

On August 3rd, 2017 Captain Greg Coleman met me at the boat and we began moving her from the boat dealer's dock to a marina where I had reserved an end-tie spot with a great view. At the same time, Captain Greg also taught me my very first class in boat navigation. The moment that the engine was started, I was immediately promoted to “deckhand 3rd class” and my first job was to be on the look-out at the stern for oncoming boat traffic from all directions, while Captain Greg was slowly backing out of the boat’s slip.

Captain Greg talked about various safety rules and regulations, including using the boat’s horn in a specific manner to alert other boats and he explained the reason for the posted traffic signs in the river. He also talked about the need for the multiple instruments and the various functions of certain handles, switches and thrusters.

After a while, Captain Greg allowed me to take the “wheel” and while he was standing right next to me, I was navigating the boat on the Delta’s waterways! When we got closer to the marina, he took over so that we could safely find our way to the designated dock.

Having an experienced boat captain such as Greg Coleman on your boat, at your side, to guide you through all the ins and outs of boating, makes the whole boating experience incredibly pleasant, relaxed, very informative and useful! I tremendously enjoyed the afternoon on the boat under the watchful eyes of Captain Greg and I am planning to continue the boat instruction lessons until I feel 100% comfortable with handling the boat.
